What to Wear for Alaskan Wildflower Photo Sessions: 8 Tips

Updated: Jul 2

Alaskan wildflowers are only in bloom for such a short time in our limited summer months! There's a narrow window fo taking your beautiful wildflower photos, and we want to make the best of it. Here's eight tips for standing out during your Alaskan wildflower photo session!

High School Seniors, families, and an engaged couple posing among the wildflowers in Interior Alaska near Denali national Park.

  1. What you feel good in. Before you buy something new, look through our own closet and see what you FEEL good in. Do you have a favorite sweater that goes with your favorite jeans? A summer dress that makes you feel unstoppable? Start with something you already own that FEELS like YOU. That's what we want to capture during your photos.

  2. Wearing white helps the wildflowers POP. Choosing a white shirt, sweater or dress will really help you stand out from the wildflowers, and the wildflowers to POP in front of you! If you are doing family photos, I suggest that not everyone be in white, but that you sprinkle some light neutrals throughout. Think a light pink like this mama here, a khaki color pant or shirt, or even white with a little pattern to break things up. Plus, wearing white helps your images feel lighter and brighter!

3. Take breaks as needed! It can be hot, the bugs can be bad, and especially if you have little ones, we will take breaks as needed!

4. If you're wearing something bold, pair it with white or a neutral. If you are wanting to show off your favorite pair of fancy pants with a bright bold pattern, or are dying to show off your newest set of boots, include white in your outfit to tone the overall look down and help bring extra attention to your exciting accessory!

5. For a bolder look, go with neutrals in a medium shade. Think denim, light to medium blue, medium shades of green or pink. Choosing darker colors will make your images slightly more dark - but not in a bad way! You can still stand out against the wildflowers. If you are taking family photos, I suggest not having everyone in a light shade with just one or two darker shades thrown in. If you need extra help planing your outfits for family photos, you can always reach out!

6. Bring bug spray! I can help you prep in lots of ways for your photo session, but I cannot control the mosquitoes! (They probably just want to join in on the photo session fun too!) You know how the bugs can be in Interior Alaska can be. Bring a can of bug spray to your wildflower photo session, just in case.

7. If you want your outfit to POP, choose ONE thing vibrant. Well, one thing vibrant besides your smile!! :) I love these boots here making such a statement amongst the wildflowers! BUT they are only able to do this because the rest of the outfit is so neutral. It really works together! Below, this senior's sweater is a great color on her and really helps her pop away from the mountain scene!

8. For an earthy vibe, choose a soft shade of green. Listen, I have such a fondness for green and am such a fan of including it in your wildflower photos - if done correctly! Don't choose a Christmassy-green, but a soft earthy green can be really beautiful in setting you in with your landscape. I'm such a fan!

All in all, your Alaskan wildflower photos are going to be incredible! I'm happy to walk with you each step of the way as you coordinate your outfits and we plan your session together.
